Opened in 1930, the park was requisitioned by the U.S. military after World War II. Redevelopment was later completed in 1961, restoring it to its current state. Since then, it has been beloved by locals and tourists alike as a relaxing place to enjoy the port, and is widely used for events. The park's distinctive features include a world plaza, designed with paths leading to the six continents, as well as a grand spiral staircase. The pleasant sea breeze and the rich nighttime port atmosphere make this a classic spot to enjoy the night view of Yokohama Port, and the good old Yokohama night view remains a staple to this day. The lights of Yamashita Pier and the Osanbashi Yokohama International Passenger Terminal, as well as the illuminations adorning the retired Hikawa Maru ocean liner, reflected beautifully on the water, are particularly beautiful. Recommended viewing spots are the circular space in the center of the park and the area around the Indian Water Tower. The park has been designated as one of the “50 Best Night Views of Yokohama” and a “Night View Heritage of Japan.”
