Kokura Castle is the only remaining castle tower in Fukuoka Prefecture. Originally built by Lord Hosokawa Tadaoki, the current castle was rebuilt in 1959 and is beloved by locals. The tower is illuminated at sunset, serving as an iconic symbol of Kokura's night scenery. After undergoing a complete renovation of its nighttime illuminations in 2021, the Kokura Castle Garden, located directly in front of the castle, started hosting Japan's first permanent light-up show. Both the castle and garden have gained recognition as one of “Japan's Top 100 Most Beautiful Moon Views,” with the combination of the Kokura Castle tower and the full moon seen through the garden making a spectacular sight. Various events are also held throughout the year, including the autumn Kokura Castle Bamboo Light festival, where approximately 30,000 bamboo lanterns illuminate the castle grounds, creating a mystical atmosphere. Local people create lanterns using local bamboo from damaged bamboo forests, contributing to the town's lively atmosphere. This project, which recycles the bamboo after the event is over, is gaining attention as an initiative that contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
